As a law firm, we believe it is important to be active in our local community. Here are some examples of our recent activities:
7th Annual Christmas for the Troops
For troops stationed overseas the holiday season can be especially difficult, a time when their distance from home is truly felt. For the past 7 years, with the help and generosity of our friends in the Durham community, we filled 15 boxes with 250 stockings that were shipped overseas to two military units that are away from their families for the holidays.
Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer, P.A. adopted 100 soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, from Fort Bragg; and 150 marines from the Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 (VMGR-252) "Otis" from Camp Lejeune. Both units are deployed in Afghanistan.
The stocking supplies were funded by donations from across the community, and then the firm did the shopping. Donors were invited to a stocking stuffing party at Pulley Watson on December 2nd, where they filled the stockings with a variety of essentials that shipped out the next day to Afghanistan. Each soldier and marine will receive his or her own stocking in time for Christmas, hopefully making their season a little brighter.

Richard Watson Gives Keynote Speech on Veterans Day
Firm partner Richard Watson gave the keynote speech at the Veterans Day gathering at the American Legion Post 7 on November 11, 2011. About 90 people, over half of them members of the Durham Police Department gathered for the celebration.
"There are over a million people who have died for our country, and our debt to these people cannot be repaid," said Watson. Richard served as a lieutenant in the Army in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam. He has received two bronze stars, an Air Medal and a Commendation for Valor in Combat.
Richard stressed the need to help veterans, many of whom deal with serious psychological issues as a result of their service and are homeless. Many of these men have been given a clean bill of health by the military, he said.
"When you see a veteran, shake their hand and say thank you. You can also thank them by hiring veterans."
Tracy Lischer Participates in "Walk for the Cure"
While on vacation in Vero Beach, FL over fall break, firm partner Tracy Lischer participated in a Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure. Tracy’s team completed 5K.
The Komen Race for the Cure series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.
All net proceeds raised from the Komen Race for the Cure go to education, screening, treatment and research programs.

Tracy Lischer Honored as a "Leader in the Law"
Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer is pleased to announce that firm partner Tracy Lischer was honored this month as one of the North Carolina Lawyers Weekly's 2011 "Leaders in the Law".
The Leaders in the Law awards were created to spotlight those within the legal community who are working to better the legal profession. Honorees are nominated by their peers and selected by a panel of judges based on qualities such as mentoring and involvement within their community, as well as going above and beyond within their career.
North Carolina Lawyers Weekly sponsors this annual award, and recognizes a small number of top attorneys from across the state. A ceremony honoring the winners was held in Raleigh on September 22.

6th Annual Christmas for the Troops
The Durham community once again came out to show their support for the troops
overseas that are away from their families during the holidays. Pulley, Watson,
King & Lischer, P.A. collected donations from friends in the community to help
fill 240 stockings to send to two military units for the holiday season to thank the
troops for their service. This is the 6th annual charity event and one of the firm’s
favorites.
The law firm adopted 160 soldiers from the 108th Military Police Company,
16th Military Police Brigade from Fort Bragg, deployed in Iraq; and 80 marines
from the Bravo Company, 2d Reconnaissance Battalion from Camp Lejeune,
deployed in Afghanistan. Each solider and marine will receive his or her own
stocking in time for Christmas.
A Stocking Stuffing Party was held at the firm on Dec. 2nd. Volunteers formed
an assembly line and filled 240 stockings with hand warmers, socks, eye drops,
chap stock, wet wipes, hand sanitizers, powder, tooth brushes, paste & floss,
disposable razors, trail mix, season salt, microwave popcorn, hot sauce, slim
jims, mints and gum. The stockings were then sewn closed before getting
packed up for shipping overseas the next morning.
“The hand warmers are a new item and a special request from one of the
marines,” said Richard Watson, partner of the firm, who spearheaded this
program six years ago. A Lieutenant in the US Army with the 199th Light Infantry
in Vietnam Nam, Watson said he and his men would have appreciated receiving
a stocking filled with items like these during the holidays.
The balance of the funds beyond the cost of the stockings were donated to the
Brain Injury Association of North Carolina (BIANC). The donation will support a
new local day program service in the Triangle area supporting military service
members with traumatic brain injuries.

2010 Safety Festival
Pulley Watson participated in a Safety Festival on Saturday, July 31 at the
Sam’s Club parking lot on Chapel Hill Blvd. in Durham. The firm shared lessons
on car seat safety, playground safety and drinking and driving awareness.

Hundreds of Parents Attend 2010 Carolina Parent Baby Fair
Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer sponsored the Carolina Parent Baby Fair on June 19, 2010 at the American Institute of Healthcare & Fitness in Raleigh. Pulley Watson has represented families whose children have suffered preventable brain damage from untreated newborn jaundice.
The firm’s goal in sponsoring the Baby Fair is to raise awareness about the dangers of severe newborn jaundice. The brain injury caused by untreated severe jaundice is called kernicterus.
In addition to the Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer exhibit, the Carolina Parent Baby Fair featured a variety of information, demonstrations and give-a-ways from medical professionals and baby-related vendors to help acquaint expectant parents with the resources available for their new arrivals.
Pulley Watson had a drawing for an iPod downloaded with lullabies, games and flashcards, as well as a one-touch instant access to the BiliTool.org website. Lauren Griffith from Raleigh was the lucky winner!

Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer Brings Awareness to Brain Injury
2010 Bike Helmet Safety Festival
Bicycle safety is important to Pulley Watson. Children who ride without helmets run the risk of major head injuries, even from seemingly minor mishaps. As a personal injury law firm, Pulley Watson has witnessed the aftermath of such incidents, and wants to help eliminate them.
As part of Brain Injury Awareness Month, Pulley, Watson, King, & Lischer, P.A. sponsored the second annual bike helmet safety festival, "Bike Head First" on Saturday, March 27 at Durham Central Park.
To stress the importance of making sure children wear a bicycle helmet, Pulley Watson gave away 100 free child-size helmets at the event, and had a drawing for a free bike. The lucky bike winner was Grace Ann Erickson.
At the event, families enjoyed an obstacle course run by the Durham City Police, free Ben & Jerry's ice cream, helmet fittings by The Bicycle Chain, a rope skipping demonstration by the Bouncing Bulldogs, BB the Clown, and a puppet show put on by the Brain Injury Association of NC.

The Banks Foundation 8th Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament
Firm partner Charlie Carpenter was teamed with celebrity host and basketball legend Walter Davis for a golfing event to help raise funds to benefit The Banks Foundation. The tournament was held at The Preserve at Jordan Lake Golf Club in Chapel Hill on June 18, 2010. The Banks Foundation was formed in November of 2000 for the purpose of assisting families who are moving from welfare to work and from public housing to private homeownership. Congratulations, Charlie for reaching out to help a great cause!
Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer Raises Jaundice Awareness at 2009 Baby Fair
Sixty percent of babies develop jaundice. Left untreated, severe jaundice may cause permanent brain damage known as Kernicterus.
The hallmarks of Kernicterus are cerebral palsy and auditory neuropathy. Because newborn jaundice is so easy to test for and treat,
Kernicterus can be prevented. Pulley Watson shared this important information on jaundice, including risk factors, early warning
signs and prevention tips at the Carolina Parent – Pulley Watson, King & Lischer Baby Fair.
Pulley Watson sponsored the Carolina Parent Baby Fair that was held Saturday, October 10 at Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh. The
Baby Fair attracted hundreds of parents looking for helpful information about baby-related services in our community.
Along with handing out pacifiers and other giveaways to the new and expectant parents, Pulley Watson had a drawing for an iPod

partner of the firm, was excited about the opportunity to share valuable information about jaundice with so many people. “Jaundice

5th Annual Christmas for the Troops
Thanks to the generosity of the Durham community, 17 boxes filled with 280 stockings were shipped December 4th to two military units overseas.
Sponsored by Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer, P.A., two units were adopted for the 5th Annual Christmas Charity Event: Army Company HHC, 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, deployed in Iraq; and a Marine Special Operations Forces Unit from Camp Lejeune, deployed in Afghanistan. Each troop will receive his or her own personal stocking filled with a variety of useful items in time for Christmas.
Over 45 guests attended the firm's Stocking Stuffing Party on Dec. 3rd to help prepare the stockings to be shipped the next day to Iraq and Afghanistan. This is a favorite event of Richard Watson's, Partner of the firm, who served as a Lieutenant in the US Army in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam. Richard says he was overwhelmed with the response from the community, generously giving of their time and money. "We not only met but exceeded our goal again this year. We couldn't have completed our mission to reach out to our military heroes without the extraordinary support of our Durham friends."

2009 Bike Helmet Safety Festival
The Pavilion at The Durham Central Park was filled with families, bicycles and activities on Saturday, March 28.
As part of Brain Injury Awareness Month, Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer, P.A. sponsored "Bike Head First", a bike
helmet safety festival.
Mike O'Foghludha, Managing Partner of the firm,
says he was overwhelmed with the turnout. "As a law firm, we've seen
injuries that bike riders can sustain, and want to keep them to a minimum. We wanted to do something to stress the
importance of making sure that children never go out and ride without a helmet." Pulley Watson gave away 75 free
child-size helmets at the event, and had a drawing for two free bikes.
The Durham Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit enjoyed participating in the event. "We applaud Pulley Watson
for their efforts to promote safe biking in the community", said Officer Tammy Schultz. Kids enjoyed an obstacle
course run by the Durham City Police, free Ben & Jerry's ice cream, bike helmet fittings by The Bicycle Chain, BB
the Clown and a puppet show put on by the Brain Injury Association of NC.

4th Annual Christmas for the Troops
Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer, P.A. adopted two units for the 4th Annual Christmas Charity Event: an Army Company, the 65th MP Company (Airborne)
from Fort Bragg, deployed in Iraq, and a Marine Special Forces Company, part of the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion from Camp Lejeune, deployed
in Afghanistan. Record monetary donations were collected to send a variety of items to the two units in time for the holidays. Extra donations
collected were used to purchase two flat screen TVs. One went to Camp Lejeune for their Special Operations Barracks, and the other to Fort Bragg for
their Soldier and Family Assistance Center.
Donors were invited to a stocking stuffing party at the firm on December 4th. Eight Marines from the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion from Camp
Lejenue, along with over 40 guests showed up to help prepare a variety of essentials assembled in 260 stockings that shipped the next day to Iraq and
Afghanistan.

Durham county Bar Association 11th Annual Golf Tournament
The Falls Village Golf Club hosted the Annual Durham County Bar Association Golf Tournament on May 19th. Members of the Durham County Bar Association and guests played in the 11th annual charity tournament, benefiting the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
San Ramon Municipal Water Project Fundraiser
Richard Watson, an avid member of the SW Durham Rotary Club, took a special interest in the fundraising for the
San Ramon municipal water project. The rotary took on the cause to get clean water into the village of San Ramon,
Nicaragua, as a prior visit to this village allowed them to witness the poor water conditions first-hand.
Richard was thrilled to be a part of the project and to attend the dedication of this new water system.
'The Island' at Manbites Dog Theatre Wins Awards
Mike O'Foghludha is president of the local theatre company 'Little Green Pig Theatrical Concern' and most recently
directed the production of 'The Island' at Manbites Dog theatre in the fall of 2008. 'The Island' was named in the
top ten theatrical productions of 2008 by the News and Observer, The Independent Weekly and Classical Voice of
North Carolina. The Independent Weekly called it "the most powerful production of the year". Little Green Pig
is in its third season in Durham and its productions were named in all categories of the best-of lists for 2008.
Another Triathlon for Richard Watson!
Richard Watson participated in his fourth triathlon for 2010 in North Myrtle Beach, SC. The event featured a 700 yard open water swim, a 13 mile bike leg, and a 5k run. This was Richard’s first triathlon ocean swim, which was beautiful but challenging. And even though he had to 'walk' the 'run', Richard came in just under his personal goal of two hours. Congratulations Richard!
North Carolina Advocates for Justice Annual Convention
The North Carolina Advocates for Justice held their annual convention June 20-24 at Sea Trail Resort in Sunset Beach,
NC. This year's convention offered a variety of informative and exciting learning opportunities, including Masters
in Advocacy seminars for both criminal and civil practitioners, CLE for paralegals and concurrent case law updates
and workshops. Richard Watson, Guy Crabtree and Mike O'Foghludha attended the convention. At the convention Richard
and Guy were recognized as members of the Order of Service of NCAJ; and Guy was recognized as a recipient of the Ebbie
Award. Order of Service members are recognized for their commitment of service to NCAJ and its mission and have given
generously of their time and talent. The Ebbie Award recognizes those members who go above and beyond in their commitment,
dedication and service to NCAJ.
The convention also offered numerous social events including a round robin doubles tennis tournament which Pulley Watson
sponsored. Guy Crabtree and Carlos Mahoney (another convention attendee) played in the tournament and finished in first
place after a hard-fought finals match. Contratulations, Guy!
Muscular Dystrophy Association Lock-Up
Tracy Lischer was "behind bars" for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Lock-Up. She raised bail which will help
fund neuromuscular research and provide services to our local area.
State Supreme Court Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism
Guy Crabtree was recently a panel member for a program sponsored by the State Supreme Court Chief Justice's Commission
on Professionalism. He spoke to District Bar attorneys and judges on the "Current Direction of Civil Law in Durham".
Habitat for Humanity Project
Pulley Watson assisted Youth United, a Durham based youth organization, and Habitat of Durham on a home for the Serrano-Otero family. The home was
completed in May 2008. The firm not only made a monetary contribution, but also participated in a work days.
UNC Law School
Pulley Watson hosted an alumni event for the UNC Law School on May 28th 2008. It provided current and graduating law students the opportunity
to network alongside the alumni community.

Mal King, an avid YMCA member and volunteer is chairing the Durham Chapter of the Triangle YMCA's Heritage Club and is also serving on the Facilities Committee for the Lakewood renovation.
